Intent
The Intent of the Physical Education Curriculum at Newton Abbot College is to develop students that are passionate, engaged and enthusiastic about physical activity. We believe in delivering an educational programme that is inclusive for all, which meets the differing needs of those whom we teach to ensure that all students can fulfil their potential.
It is our aim to offer a broad and balanced curriculum, which has sufficient depth and breadth to enable our pupils to develop their physical and mental confidence. We consistently provide a positive learning environment where students are given opportunities to demonstrate attitudes and behaviours that encompass the whole college values (courage, perseverance, hard work, achievement, kindness, respect, pride, aspiration).
We offer a breadth of activities at KS3 that is sequential in leading to study BTEC sport at KS4. We do this by ensuring that all students will be stretched and challenged over the 5 years, taking into account different starting points.
We aim to consistently embed a range of wider opportunities and experiences for all, to ensure our learners have an educational experience that is rich and varied. We also aim to provide a structured and progressive pathway for our most able students to be given the opportunity to develop and maximise their sporting success both inside and outside of college.
In KS3 students will develop their physical performance and their physical literacy to enable them to understand how to prepare and carry out physical activity safely and understand the effects of exercise on their body.
The main aims of core PE in KS4 are to promote a lifelong enjoyment in sport and further developing all the knowledge and skills learned in KS3 to prepare the students for life after school. Core PE lessons will identify ways sport and physical activities can be used to promote students physical, mental and social wellbeing.
Students will be taught about the many careers and opportunities in sport to help guide their future aspirations.

Implementation
- Through high quality curriculum which is differentiated to meet learning needs, students develop a broad range of knowledge and understanding of the core skills needed in a varied range of sports.
- Through progressive incremental challenge, students continually develop throughout their learning journey at the College.
- Through fun, engaging lessons that feature high quality teaching, pupils are challenged no matter what their starting point by developing their leadership, organisation, resilience, and communication skills and enhancing this by giving them the opportunity to be a sports leader.
- Through the delivery of theoretical topics, students are prepared to make informed decisions about PE at KS4.
- Through access to intra and inter-school competition students will be given a wide range of sporting experiences.
- Through the talent pathway that is provided with a structured gifted and talented programme, the most able students are given the opportunity to develop and maximise their sporting success.
- Importantly, we will ensure that our students develop a passion for PE and understand the multiple important benefits to having a depth of knowledge of physical education – and how this links to their wider education.
