SEND

At Newton Abbot College we encourage all our students to aspire and achieve. We are committed to offering an inclusive curriculum to ensure progress and the best possible outcomes for our students whatever their additional needs or abilities.

Our priority is to ensure all students’ needs are met within the classroom through high quality, adaptive and personalised teaching. We believe that students’ special educational needs can be best met in mainstream classes alongside their peers.

The SEND team work closely with teaching and pastoral staff to support students with individual needs that are additional to, or different from, that usually provided to other young people of the same age in school.

We recognise that providing effective personalised learning is challenging, not least when a student’s needs appear to present significant barriers to their learning. Our team aims to provide a high-quality support service to our students and staff in removing these barriers, enabling all students to become independent, resilient and successful learners. We regularly liaise with outside agencies, professionals and specialists to assist with the identification of needs and strategies to support students.

Support is provided in a variety of ways; within mainstream classes, through specialist programmes and small groups, or when needed on a one-to-one basis.  The team has specialist teaching rooms as well as smaller intervention rooms.

The SEND team is experienced and knowledgeable in providing support in each of the four key areas of need: cognition and learning, social emotional and mental health, communication and interaction and physical and sensory needs.

Our aims are to:

  • enable each student to access the curriculum, fulfil lesson objectives and make academic progress.
  • encourage students to become independent and motivated learners.
  • ensure students make progress towards their individual & personal targets.
  • develop resilient, confident and happy young people that are prepared for adult life.

Our SEND policy, Information Report and Accessibility policy can be found on our policies page by clicking here.

Individual SEND requirements are unique; so to discuss your child’s needs please contact the SEND team for more information and guidance on 01626 367335 or at info@nacollege.devon.sch.uk.

Our SEND team is as follows:

  • SENDCo – Sara Chapman
  • Assistant SENDCo – Joni Saunders
  • Assistant SENDCo – Brian Chapman
  • SEND team administrator – Amanda Dennis

Ofsted 2024

“The school quickly identifies the needs of pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Teachers know pupils well and use their knowledge of pupils’ individual needs to adapt the curriculum effectively. Pupils receive additional support when required. For example, through the recently opened Rosehill Learning Hub. As a result, the school is inclusive and disadvantaged pupils learn as well as their peers.”
