Student Leadership Opportunities at Newton Abbot College 2024-2025
This academic year we are increasing the amount of student leadership opportunities for students at Newton Abbot College. We feel that it is very important that our young people take on new responsibilities and challenge themselves so that they develop self-confidence and resilience.
- Student Council
Each term, two students from each tutor group will represent the year group student council. Students will discuss key issues and make decisions that will help to make improvements at Newton Abbot College.
- Subject Ambassadors
Each term, every department will nominate two students from Year 7-10. Students will support their selected department with Open Events, primary school tours, and Year 6 transition events.
- Year 11 Prefects
This year we have fifty Year 11 Prefects. They work as a team to raise expectations and standards across the college. They support younger students, complete morning duties, and support events across the college.
- Anti-bullying Ambassadors
Students play an important role in creating awareness about the need for respect and kindness across the college. Students will receive training and use their skills to educate all students.
- Charity Ambassadors
Each year we support a charity that has links to our local area. Again, we have a fundraising target of £10,000. Students will encourage all students and staff to support this year’s charity, RNLI.
- Equality Ambassadors
Students promote equality and diversity throughout the college using assemblies, tutor times, and drop in groups. Ambassadors support identified students, giving advice and guidance.
- Wellbeing Ambassadors
Students in Year 10 play a huge role in the smooth running of the Wellbeing Hub at break times – welcoming students to the Hub, organising activities, and encouraging younger students to feel an important part of our college community.
- Sports Leaders
Our KS3 pupils have the opportunity to lead our primary school sports events. If they have had an outstanding year in PE, they have the chance to apply and become Sports Ambassadors (Bronze, Silver or Gold). These are then our go to students for any of our big scale sporting events. In Year 10, we appoint 10-15 Sports Captains who become the figureheads of Sport at NAC. These students are responsible for running clubs, supporting the department, and taking on leadership roles across the sporting calendar.
- Eco-council Ambassadors
Students will help to raise awareness about important environmental issues that we all face. They will also investigate how the college community can be more environmentally aware and put plans in place to create a greener and more sustainable school environment.
- Reading Ambassadors
Students will support reading and assist with study centre activities giving all students the opportunity to utilise the library to its full capacity and follow their passion of reading.
