Welcome to PE and Sport @ Newton Abbot College
The aim of our PE Department is to ensure that all students enjoy being physically active and leave Newton Abbot College having found a sport that they continue with later on in life. We strongly believe in the power of physical activity to keep young people mentally and physically happy and healthy and we share this belief with our students. PE develops students’ physical competence and confidence and their ability to perform in a range of activities. it promotes the development of physical skills, whilst developing knowledge about the body in action.
Physical education plays an integral role in developing students physically, socially and morally. It provides opportunities for students to be creative, competitive and to face up to different challenges, both as individuals and in groups and teams. It promotes positive attitudes towards active and healthy lifestyles and develops students’ interests and abilities in a range of different activities and helps to identify and support sporting stars of the future. We are a department who celebrate all achievements and strive for success; whether that be learning to ride a bike for the first time or competing in the Netball national finals, the wealth of experience and drive within the PE team will make it happen.
At Newton Abbot College we are incredibly proud of the wide range of activities we offer through our curriculum and extra-curricular pathways. Our sporting activities reflect the wonderful part of the world we live in e.g. swimming lessons as part of our KS3 curriculum; and the ever-changing trends in sport e.g. the huge growth in girls rugby and football.
Unique offerings within our curriculum include:
- Swimming
- Water polo
- Cycling
- Flag Football
- Korfball
- Futsal
For those students who want to participate in sport outside of lesson times we have a fantastic range of breaktime and afterschool clubs that allow those who love sport to develop their skills even further.
These clubs include:
- Football
- Rugby
- Netball
- Hockey
- Futsal
- Basketball
- Table Tennis
- Cricket
- Rounders
- Athletics
At our highest level we have teams competing in National Cups in both Netball and Football and in County tournaments across all sports. Where we have teams excelling, we invest in external coaching to ensure our students have every chance of competing at the highest level. This is currently happening in netball where in recent years we have reached the regional round of the National Schools competition for three successive years and the National Final in 2022 where we were placed sixth in the country.
At the end of the year we come together to celebrate what our wonderful students have achieved throughout the year in our annual sports awards. We give prizes for players and teams of the year, exceptional leadership, contribution to PE and the coveted prizes of junior, senior and overall Sports Performer of the year. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to reflect as a PE team and whole school on the fantastic array of talent and dedication our students have.
