Intent
The intent of the Values curriculum at Newton Abbot College is to help each student to have high expectations of themselves and others. The aim is that every student who passes through our hands should leave us as empowered, emboldened and responsible citizens who are aiming to be the very best they can be.
Our aim is that students leave NAC with a greater understanding of how they can look after themselves physically, mentally, socially and emotionally. They will have an understanding of how they can live their lives demonstrating the 8 values in all aspects of their lives.
Across the five years of study, the students will grow in their understanding of what the 8 NAC values of Courage, Perseverance, Hard work, Achievement, Kindness, Respect, Pride and Aspiration look like in practice and develop those values within themselves.
Our students will be encouraged to maximise opportunities and treat all individuals with care and compassion.
We aim to provide all our students with the best educational experience we can. We will deliver high quality lessons that inspire and engage.
SEND – we will work with the individuals with kindness, respect and inclusivity to produce lessons that are accessible to all. Tasks will be structured to meet individual need. We also utilise student passports to inform our teaching and approach.
The STL for Values meets with the SEND dept to discuss any challenging issues for individual students.
Implementation
The intent of our curriculum is implemented through:
- Studying a variety of topics related to personal, social, health, relational and academic development.
- Undertaking tasks that involve considering and forming a viewpoint on important issues and developing a world view that is respectful of others.
- Having the opportunity to work with outside agencies who can help bring the topics to life
- Having the opportunity to attend extra- curricular activities and represent the school in a variety of ways including as a volunteer and leader.
- Using a variety of assessment methods that test character, knowledge and skills.
In KS3 we also build on their knowledge from primary school in PSHE and the mandatory national requirements for ‘Relationships and Sex Education’
In KS4 we continue to explore a range of challenging topics that build on KS3 based on either PSHE, RSE such as careers education and health education.
In KS5 we deliver the PSHE association 3 modules, Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World.
Impact
Through the spiral curriculum, students will develop an understanding of who they are, how they ‘fit’ into the world around them and they will develop an awareness of the multi-cultural society in which they live. They will develop their self- awareness and self – confidence. They will use this knowledge and the confidence in that knowledge, to make good, safe, healthy lifestyle choices.
