Intent

The intent for Health and Social Care at Newton Abbot College, is to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of a wide range of opportunities within the field, whilst preparing students for the world of work. It is a vocational qualification which takes an engaging, practical and inspiring approach to learning and assessment.

The course raises awareness of different needs and the range of primary, secondary and tertiary services available. The key aspects of the Health & Social Care curriculum include human development, care values and health & wellbeing. All aspects of the curriculum develop skills such as empathy, lifestyle factors, social, cultural and economic factors, understanding of stereotypes, discrimination and the importance of a holistic approach.

The curriculum challenges students to work independently (through assessment-based tasks) and collaboratively and empowers every student to develop a curiosity and a desire for knowledge.

The curriculum is designed and delivered in a linear way so that each component builds on previous knowledge thereby further embedding students understanding. It allows students to grow in confidence, whilst giving them the opportunity to put into practice what they have learnt.

Implementation

This will be implemented by:

• Opportunities for students to take part in a range of practical and inspiring lessons which develop students’ knowledge and understanding.
• Opportunities for students to discuss current affairs and issues verbally with their peers through a range of engaging activities designed to build these skills.
• Encourage students to make difficult decisions in care situations with the knowledge of value systems and ethical theories.
• A coherent and sequential curriculum that is accessible for all students to develop curiosity and a desire for knowledge.
• Adaptive teaching for all students, where the needs of the learners are considered and catered for.
• High expectations for all students to engage in all aspects of learning with a belief all students can achieve their potential.
• Teamwork and collaboration between staff and students to achieve positive outcomes consistently.
• Opportunities for students gain independence and develop their organisational skills.
• A consistently positive environment where there are a range of strategies where students can receive praise (e.g. verbal and postcards sent home, class charts points).

Impact

• All students at the college will be supported to achieve a nationally recognised qualification.
• Students will have developed a wider knowledge and understanding of the world around them.
• Students will be provided with a pathway to explore KS5 courses as well as higher education and employment.
• Students will build resilience, have a positive mindset and develop confidence as well as a range of other skills which will help to prepare them for the future.
