Dear parents/carers,
We’ve had a really busy sporting week with a number of fixtures. The year 11 boys’ football team started the week showing amazing resilience playing against Teignmouth in the South Devon cup with only 10 men – but coming away with a 3-0 win to take them into the next round. The football successes continued on Wednesday when our year 9 boys’ team beat Spires 6-0 to progress in the South Devon Cup. Our under-14 girls football team continues to develop as a team with a strong performance at the central venue league winning 1, drawing 1 and narrowly losing one. Unfortunately, our year 7 boys footballers lost against a strong Teignmouth team but this will only help them to grow as they continue their growth as a team.
Our under-13 girls represented South Devon at the indoor cricket county finals after winning the South Devon competition. They came 6th overall which is fantastic! Well done to all our fantastic players who have represented the college so admirably.
And lastly, a netball update – our under-13s travelled to Croydon on Monday for the quarter final of the national Sisters in Sport competition where they put in a winning performance and qualified for the final at Loughborough on Wednesday – one of only four teams in the country. Coming 4th in the whole country, after competing against the best private schools in the country, is an inspirational, and courageous achievement. One of the officials made a point of coming across to tell us that they were their favourite school for the way they conducted themselves on and off the court – which makes us doubly proud because this embodies all our college values in one go – well done and thank you!
We finish with wishing our under-16 netballers the best of luck for their National Finals this weekend.
Our Ten Tors team are off on their rearranged practice walk on Dartmoor this weekend. It may be raining but at least temperatures should not be dropping below freezing. Hopefully….
Our year 12 and year 10 students have had an assembly today from ‘The Girl on a Bike’ Vanessa Ruck, who is an award-winning TED-EX motivational speaker, motorcycle racer, rally driver and adventurer who after a life-changing accident a few years ago has been inspired to make the most of each day and help others to do the same.
Students have conducted themselves brilliantly in Assessment Week and applied themselves well. There has been a real buzz among students wanting to do their best which has been lovely to listen to. What has also been really impressive is seeing how students have grown in confidence in terms of how to revise and are seeing the benefits of it when they complete their assessments. The next two weeks are feedback weeks, when students will be able to revisit areas where they haven’t performed as well and after extra teaching on these areas will be given the chance to upgrade them.
Year 11 have finished their two weeks of mock exams. Their conduct has also been, on the whole, great, with most of them displaying a very mature and sensible attitude. Students will be receiving their exam grades on Wednesday 27th March, so that they are able to spend their Easter holidays revising all subjects, but particularly those that they may not have performed as well in. What has also been great to see is that year 11s’ attendance during mocks has increased, showing that our students recognise the importance of their mock exams. Well done year 11.
Thank you to all our college community for their fundraising efforts today for Comic Relief. It is lovely to see the way our college and community support charity events. We will share how much we have raised in next week’s update.
Year 8 parents’ evening saw a great turnout last night with 94% attendance – thank you to all those who attended; it really is important that parents and college work together to support our students be the best they can be.
Just a reminder that Monday is an INSET day, so we will welcome all students back to school on Tuesday.
Have a lovely weekend.
Take care,
Amy Grashoff
