Supporting students with autism

Autism at Newton Abbot College

What is autism?

Autism is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. People with ASD often have problems with social communication and interaction, and restricted or repetitive behaviours or interests. People with ASD may also have different ways of learning, moving, or paying attention.

Here at NAC we have a number of students either diagnosed with autism (Autism spectrum condition ASC/ASD autism spectrum disorder) or on the pathway.

Support at NAC

We aim to support all students to remain in their lessons, as this is where they have access to their subject specialist teachers and will make the most progress. However, we recognise for some students the school environment can be challenging at times. Newton Abbot College has a sensory room and we are able to offer a Sensory Pass for use during times of high anxiety. This room is open during timetabled periods of the day and during both break times. It is a calm and quiet space away from sensory triggers such as noise or smell. There is also the opportunity for students to share their special interests at break times with their own clubs, we currently have a train, Lego and uno club.

For some students, we offer 1:1 sessions with either Mrs Ward or Miss Romero-Flett. These sessions are tailored to the individual need of the student.  Sessions may be on social skills, communication and interaction, emotional regulation or learning more about autism.
