A SWTT success story at Newton Abbot College: Jon Fox, teacher of Mathematics at Newton Abbot College
As an “older” person I didn’t feel the University based PGCE route was the best for me, so I applied for a position at NAC as an unqualified teacher and I’m so glad I did. I was given a wonderful mentor who looked after me and ensured I was properly supported especially in the early weeks where everything was new and scary.
I had my lessons covered whilst I attended college and when I was struggling with a certain aspect of teaching my mentor and department were always willing to step up and offer advice, or to show me how they had gotten through similar situations.
My external assessor was always impressed with how I was being supported in my training year, and the amount of teaching I was doing was far higher than a PGCE student, meaning I was learning fast. In comparison to a PGCE student by the end of the year I was far more experienced in the most important part of teaching, I had built relationships with my classes and the school made me feel like a “real” teacher from day 1.
The route I took into teaching is not for everyone as it’s really hard work. However, that hard work really has made me a better teacher. I am so glad I was employed by NAC, and, now in my second year of teaching, love my job and my students.
