Duke of Edinburgh & Ten Tors

Ten Tors

What is it?

The Ten Tors Challenge is a team event (6) that is held annually on Dartmoor. The teams navigate routes of 35, 45 or 55 miles (depending on age) over the northern half of Dartmoor, visiting ten nominated tors / check points in under two days. Teams must be self-sufficient carrying their personal kit such as clothing, food and water, whilst also sharing the load of their accommodation for the evening – a tent. They must navigate their way effectively across Dartmoor and camp for an evening before finishing the event the next day.

The benefits?

The benefits of participating in Ten Tors are endless. Students approach training with naivety, however, they finish the Ten Tors challenge with pride, determination, unselfishness, friends for life and a passion for the outdoors.

How does it run?

The students will voluntarily apply for the Ten Tors and depending on previous experience/fitness levels and teamwork will be placed into groups of six aiming to march either 35 or 45 miles over the two days.

Prior to this, the students will undergo numerous training evenings/weekends where they will be taught how to:

Map read and navigate effectively.

Plan precise and accurate route cards.

Administer both themselves and the kit they will carry.

Develop team-cohesion.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a prestigious international program that aims to empower young individuals to challenge themselves, learn new skills, engage in community service, and embark on exciting outdoor adventures. By participating in the DofE program, students have the chance to develop invaluable life skills, gain self-confidence, and enhance their personal growth.

The benefits of the DofE program are numerous and wide-ranging. Here are some of the key advantages that your child can expect to gain through their involvement:

  • Personal Development: The DofE program provides a structured framework for personal growth, encouraging young people to set goals, overcome challenges, and build resilience. The skills they acquire during the program will stay with them for a lifetime.
  • Teamwork and Communication: By working in teams, students develop essential skills such as effective communication, cooperation, and problem-solving. They learn to appreciate the value of collaboration and the strength of collective efforts.
  • Leadership Skills: The DofE program offers opportunities for students to take on leadership roles, allowing them to develop and demonstrate leadership qualities. These experiences can be valuable in various aspects of their lives, both now and in the future.
  • Enhanced CV/Resume: Completing the DofE program is highly regarded by universities, colleges, and employers worldwide. It showcases a student’s commitment, determination, and ability to excel beyond the classroom.

At Newton Abbot College we provide the opportunity for our students to get involved with the Bronze, Silver and Gold award. Our students have planned and taken part in expeditions on Dartmoor, Exmoor, Brecon Beacons and on the South West Coast Path.
